Hollins Defends Home Turf

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - For the first time this season, Hollins looked to defend her home field as Averett University came calling in non-conference action. After starting the season on a six game road trip, Hollins opened up a four match home stand against the Cougars.

Averett brought a 1-1 mark into the match while Hollins looked to pick up their third win of the season. The Cougars opened up the scoring when Skye Gunn tracked down a rebounded shot and placed into the back of the net. The Hollins defense stepped up over the next several minutes but were unable to generate much zone time. With the majority of the action being played on the Hollins half of the field, the road team began to find some open space and scored five unanswered goals to close out the first half. The second frame saw the deep Averett roster, nine different goal scorers, continue to wear down the Hollins defense. As the final horn sounded, Averett had come to Roanoke and picked up the win, 12-0.

Hannah Armstrong made several fantastic saves to help keep the home team in the match early. Armstrong finished her afternoon at the 80 minute mark and recorded 19 saves on the afternoon.

Amanda Gustavasson scored three times and Riley Smith added a pair. Katie Abelseth and Christine Harris each scored once and assisted on three more scores. A pair of Cougar keepers combined to record the shutout with Irania Ventura registering one save when Ciera Morris sent a shot on goal.

Hollins will be back in action on her home turf on Saturday when DI Hampton comes to town for a 2:00 start.
