The Lead:Â The Hollins soccer team hosted Averett in the final match of the 2026 season. The two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foes came into the afternoon with identical ODAC records allowing the winner to move up a spot in the final conference match of the season. Hollins would win the shot battle, 26-22, however the Cougars used a pair first half goals to seize control. Hollins answered to get to within two, but Averett would add four more second half scores to pull away for the 6-1 ODAC win.
HighlightsÂ
- Just over 10 minutes into the match, Averett sent a pass over the Hollins defense and beat the keeper for a 1-0 advantage.
- At the 36-minute mark, Averett once again seemed to find the back of the net but the shot was saved by defender Raven Zavala. On the rebound, the Cougars secured the loose ball and deposited it in the net for a 2-0 halftime lead.
- Coming out of the break the visitors added to their advantage on the first of what would be four goals for Delaney Haymore.
- An Averett foul would award Hollins a free kick from midfield. Hayley Ponn sent a high arching pass over the defense to an open Macy Lieb. Lieb used a one-touch shot to beat the Cougar keeper and cut the deficit to 2-1 with just over 30 minutes left to play.
- Hollins could not capitalize on the momentum change as Averett scored three times in the final 20 minutes to secure the ODAC win.
- Lieb led the offense with nine shots, four on goal. Isabella Byron added seven shots (two on goal), while senior Evelin Lemus-Arriaga attempted four shots, all four on target. Lida Krodel also took four shots with Caylie Nichols and Rachel Hull each adding one shot.
- Zoe Baxter got the start in goal and recorded nine saves. For the season, Baxter made eight starts and registered 74 saves.
Up Next: The match puts a wrap on a 2026 campaign that would see Hollins go through an injury plagued season. Despite playing short handed throughout the year, Hollins scored the third most goals in the past 13 seasons and returns a strong core of young talent with an eye towards 2027.
