Saffer Nets Goal Against Wildcats

Box Score

Salem, VA - Due to the intense rain, the Hollins vs Johnson & Wales soccer match had to be moved from campus to Salem High School.  Hollins faced off with the Wildcats under the lights in Salem.

The game started out with neither team giving an inch.  Throughout much of the first half, the two defenses appeared up to the task as the game remaind scoreless for the first 30 minutes of play thanks to a fantastic recovery and blocked shot by Maya Sproelich (Cary, NC).  At the 34 minute mark, the Wildcats finally found a way to get past the stingy Hollins defense.  Abigail Durisseau sent a pass to a streaking Ayanna Dawson down the left sideline and past the Hollins defenders.  Dawson beat the Hollins goalkeeper for the game's first goal.  Less than 10 minutes later Johnson & Wales leading scorer, Danielle Doyle found some space and found the back of the net to increase the Wildcat lead to two.  Hollins was able to fire off four first half shots but at the break the visitors from Charlotte enjoyed a 2-0 advantage.

Much of the second half once again saw the two teams trading scoring chances.  At the 65 minute lark, Doyle added the second of her four goals on the night to push the lead to 3-0.  After another Johnson & Wales goal, Hollins found themselves in a big hole.  However, the Hollins offense came to life when first year midfielder Kally Saffer (Winston-Salem, NC) won a 50/50 ball at midfield.  Saffer dribbled around a pair of defenders and before the rest of the defense could collapse, Saffer set a bending shot into the back of the Wildcat net.  Despite leading Hollins in shots, the goal was the first of Saffer's collegiate career.  Hollins was unable to capitalize on their momentum and when the final horn sounded, the Wildcats had come to the Roanoke Valley and left with a 6-1 victory.

Saffer directed four of her team high seven shots on the Johnson & Wales goal.  Mackenzie Roberts (Alton Bay, NH) took a pass and sent a shot just wide leading to the goal kick that directly preceded the Saffer tally.  Goalkeeper Audrey Haisley (Ashburn, VA) recorded five saves while going the distance in net.

Doyle scored four of the Johnson & Wales six goals while assisting on another.  Dawson and Dulaney each added a goal with Durisseau registering two of the Wildcat's six assists.

Hollins will hit the road for a pair of ODAC games, starting with a trip to Randolph-Macon on Saturday.  The game is scheduled for 11:00am Saturday morning but check www.HollinsSportsfor updates as this weekend's weather forecast is for torrential rain and possible storms.
