Hollins Battles Mary Baldwin

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - For the third time in five days, the Hollins/Mary Baldwin rivalry was on display when the Squirrels came to Roanoke for an out of conference soccer match.  The Hollins volleyball team squared off with Mary Baldwin on Wednesday night in Staunton before facing their all women's rival again at the Roanoke College Maroon Classic on Saturday afternoon.  Hollins had gotten better of the Squirrels in the two volleyball matchups and looked to make it a sweep with a win on the pitch.

Hollins looked good early, keeping the ball in the Mary Baldwin zone for much of the first 10 minutes of play.  However, the Fighting Squirrels turned the tables and started to put on some offensive pressure of their own.  At the 20 minute mark, the game saw its' first score when Bethany Rusticelli shot from about 40 feet out and sailed the ball over the goalkeepers head and into the back of the net.  Mary Baldwin used that goal to gain the momentum and continue to pressure their hosts for much of the remainder of the first half.  Hollins found themselves down, 6-0, heading into the break.

The second half was much more tightly contested, with the two teams each attempting eight, second half shots.  Trailing late in the contest, Hollins was able to finally crack the Baldwin defense to score their first home goal of the young season.  Jhovanna Salmeron (Zebulon, NC) sent a pass from midfield over the Squirrels defense to the waiting feet of Ciera Morris (Ocean View, DE).  Morris beat the Mary Baldwin goalkeeper to the pass and drove a shot into the left side of the net for her first collegiate goal.  Click here to see the Morris goal.  Despite the late goal, Hollins could not mount a comeback and fell to their rivals, 8-1.

Kally Saffer (Winston-Salem, NC) once again led Hollins with nine total shots, three on net while junior Christina Havrila (Ruckersville, VA) added four of Hollins season high 15 shots, nine on goal.  Goalkeeper Audrey Haisley (Ashburn, VA) went the distance in net, recording eight saves.

Brenda Santamaria scored a hat trick to led Mary Baldwin.  Brittany Tenn made eight stops in picking up the win in goal.

Hollins will have a few days to rest before the start of ODAC play.  Hollins will welcome Virginia Wesleyan to campus on Saturday afternoon for their conference opener.
