Box Score Winston-Salem, NC - Friday afternoon marked a rare neutral site, individual match when Hollins hosted Wesleyan College at BB&T Soccer Park in Winston-Salem, NC. Both teams came into the matchup looking for their first wins of the season. Hollins came up short in a pair of matches at the Meredith College Classic while Wesleyan brought an 0-1-1 mark into the contest.
The day couldn't have been more perfect as the clear skies made for an ideal backdrop for the out of conference match. Wesleyan had the first crack and opening the scoring but the Hollins defense was up to the task early. However at the nine minute mark, the Wolves were able to send the ball deep into he Hollins zone and Taylor Johnson beat the Hollins goalkeeper to the ball and after dribbling around a defender, placed the ball in the back of the net. Wesleyan had a great chance to add to their lead but goalkeeper Audrey Haisley (Denver, CO) made a terrific save on a direct kick over a wall of defenders. With a little over 13 minutes left in the opening half, Hollins had a chance to tie the score but the direct kick by first-year Kally Saffer (Winston-Salem, NC) sailed just over the crossbar. After surviving another direct kick opportunity, Hollins was poised to go into the break trailing just 1-0. With under two minutes on the clock, Wesleyan once again beat the Hollins defense when a pass split a pair of defenders and the Wolves beat the Hollins goalkeeper for a two goal lead.
Hollins got off to a sluggish start in the second half and a pair of early Wesleyan goals all but put the match out of reach. Hollins had a couple of really good scoring opportunities late in the match but Saffer and Ciera Morris (Ocean View, DE) were each shut down by goalkeeper Centara Nulf as Wesleyan held on for a 6-0 victory.
Haisley once again reached double digits with 11 saves. Morris, Saffer, and Christina Havrila (Ruckersville, VA) helped to lead Hollins to a season high in shots.
Johnson scored twice while four other Wolves added single goals. Nulf went the distance in net, picking up the shutout.
Hollins will get back to Roanoke and have one day to prepare for Mary Baldwin. Hollins plays host to the Squirrels on Sunday afternoon.
