Staunton, VA - The Hollins University soccer team traveled north to face Mary Baldwin College on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. It marked the second match in as many days for a depleted Hollins team in search of their first victory of the season. Sweet Briar defeated Hollins on Saturday in their first conference match of the season.
Hollins was able to avoid letting their opponent get out to a quick start as has been an issue in the early stages of the season. The defense stood strong for the matches opening 15 minutes but the relentless Mary Baldwin attack finally broke through. Over the next five minutes of play, the Squirrels were able to find the back of the Hollins. After two more quick goals the home team enjoyed a 5-0 lead at the midway point of the first frame. Two more tallies before the break gave Mary Baldwin a big lead at the break. During the second half, Hollins was bale to keep the Squirrels from adding to their lead but every time Hollins had a chance to move the ball down the field, they were turned away by the Mary Baldwin defense. When the final horn sounded Hollins had fallen in the non-conference match up, 8-0.
In her second consecutive start in net, Audrey Haisley (Ashburn, VA) stopped 11 shots in the first half and recorded 16 saves for the match. It was her second double-digit save effort in as many days. Bonnie Jo Blevins (Mars Hill, NC) led the Hollins attack in shots but every time Hollins sent a shot towards their hosts net, it was turned away.
Mayzie Lewis and Janelly Ramos led the Mary Baldwin attack with two goals apiece. Four other Mary Baldwin players added solo tallies while four net minders combined to shut out their visitors.
Hollins schedule doesn't get any easier as all their remaining matches are against ODAC competition starting with next Saturday's trip to Virginia Wesleyan.
