Late Goal Upends Hollins

Box Score

Decatur, GA - For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Hollins soccer team took the field in search of picking up a road win to start the season. Sunday marked the third of six consecutive road matches to kick off the 2016 campaign. Hollins looked to exact a bit of revenge against a Wesleyan College team that defeated them, 2-0, one year ago.

Hollins would need to begin to find her legs on offense if they were to turn the tables on the Wolves. The match started with both teams looking for that spark that would give one or the other the advantage in terms of field position. Wesleyan was the first to attempt to get on the board, taking the game's first three shots. Hollins was able to switch the field and keep their opponents off the board but still struggled to gain any significant zone time. First-year goal keeper Hannah Armstrong, fresh of a 24 save effort against Agnes Scott, was once again tested early and often. Armstrong and her defensive mates were solid and the score remaind 0-0. Late in the first half Hollins got some great chances. With just over a minute to play, Alexis McDonough got off a shot that went just wide. 30 seconds later, Darien Cook launched a shot on net that was saved by the Wolves keeper and the game was scoreless at the break.

The second half saw more of the same. Still scoreless the match entered the final 10 minutes when Wesleyan finally broke through the tough Hollins back line to score. Hollins had to take some chances in the closing minutes and with 2:13 left to play, Cook got another chance but once again the shot was turned aside. Wesleyan got a late tally to make the final score 2-0.

Armstrong finished with 21 saves, her second 20+ stop effort in as many matches. Cook led the way with a pair of shots on goal.

Katie Tanner netted the game winner for the Wolves while Quenshawn Brandon added the late goal on an assist from Alyssa Whitford. Carlee Dykes recorded a pair of saves en route to her fist win of the season.

Hollins will continue her season opening road trip with a visit to Mary Baldwin on Wednesday.
