Hollins Rally Falls Short

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - Tuesday night marked the first of back to back home matches for the Hollins volleyball team. Salem College would be the opponent on the eve before a visit from Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Bridgewater on Wednesday.

The Spirits raced out to a 6-0 lead to open the match. Hollins began to chip away at the advantage and forced a Salem timeout after cutting into the lead. However, Salem wouldn't let Hollins complete the comeback and took the opener, 25-18. Set two was all Hollins early as the home team built a six point cushion, 10-4. Every time the Spirits would cut into the advantage, the young Hollins squad would hold off their guests. The home team would hold a four point lead late in the set, 20-16, but the visitors would mount a late charge and tie the set at 22-22. Hollins couldn't stop the Salem run and fell down two sets to none, 25-23. With the momentum fully on the side of Salem, the Spirits didn't let Hollins back into the match taking the third, and final set, 25-11.

Deja Hadden led Hollins with 11 kills on her 25 attempts while adding six digs and a pair of blocks. Hollins held their own at the net thanks to four blocks by Ki'Ana Speights to go with four kills and two service aces. Setter Casey Mahan had the best all around night of her young career with 18 assists, 12 digs, two kills, and helping on two of Hollins six blocks. McKinley Isaacs added four kills and an assist.

Kylie Taffer led Salem with 12 kills, nine digs, three assists, and a service ace. Hannah Delcamp handed out 34 helpers with Mariah Sharon digging out 22 balls on the back line.

Hollins will host Bridgewater College tomorrow night at 6:30pm.
