Box Score 2 The Hollins volleyball team played two more matches in the second and final day of the 2106 Roanoke College Maroon Classic on Saturday afternoon. Hollins played a pair of USA South opponents, Ferrum and Mary Baldwin, to wrap up play.
Hollins would take on the Panthers of Ferrum in the first match of the day. Hollins fell behind early and saw their in-state rival take the first set, 25-18. The Panthers kept their momentum and cruised in the second frame, 25-11, to take a commanding, 2-0, lead. The third set was tightly contested with neither team gaining much of an advantage. Much like yesterday, Hollins could pull even but with the score tied late, 23-23, it was the opponent that enjoyed the matchups final run taking the final two points to sweep the match, 3-0.
Deja Hadden and Ki'Ana Speights accounted for 17 of Hollins 26 kills while Casey Mahan assisted on 17 Hollins attacks. Mahan and Torri Jolly recorded eight digs apiece with Speights and Courtney Chappell accounting for all five of Hollins' service aces.
Ferrum used a balanced attack to out score Hollins 40-26 at the net. Cheyenne Strickland handed out 22 assists and Sarah Hendrix registered a match high 22 digs.
The afternoon match pitted Hollins against Mary Baldwin, marking the third match with the Squirrels since Wednesday night. Mary Baldwin once again raced out to and advantage by taking the first two sets (25-17 and 27-25). However this time Hollins battled all the way back, taking sets three and four, to force a fifth and final set. The Squirrels scored four of the set's first five points and never let Hollins close the gap en route to a 15-11 victory.
Hadden converted 20 of her 55 attacks with Speights (7) and Chappell (6) helping Hollins to her best hitting match of the young season. Mahan added 21 assists and Jolly led with 15 digs.
As in the previous two matches, Katelyn Rice led Mary Baldwin with 21 kills and seven digs. Reilly Kelly had 34 assists whith Xenna Belfield adding 24 digs.
For her efforts over the weekend, Hadden was named to the All Tournament team.
Hollins will return home on Tueday night when they host Wilson College at 6:30.
