2016 Season Opens In Greensboro

Box Score

Greensboro, NC - The Hollins University soccer team traveled to North Carolina for their 2016 season opener.  Hollins took the turf against the Pride of Greensboro College looking to get the new season off to a good start.

The season opener was played under the threat of lightning storms all evening long. The home team scored the first goal of the game at the 8:47 mark when Gabbriele Edinger took a pass through the center of the defense to beat the keeper.  For the next 30 minutes of play, Hollins turned up her defensive effort and held the Pride off the scoreboard while first-year keeper Hannah Armstrong turned away any shots that got through the defense. Greensboro used 17 first half shots to wear down the young Hollins squad and led 3-0 at the break.

The second frame saw a continued offensive attack by the home team as the Pride amassed 19 more shots in the second 45 minutes of play.  Greensboro converted more easily in the second half as the Hollins offense never got on track and fell, 12-0, in their season opener.

Armstrong, playing her first collegiate game, made 11 saves will facing shot after shot as the Pride used 28 different players during the match.

Anna Rae Porcelli and her three goals and two assists led Greensboro. Mercedes Fisher also netted three goals while Edinger scored twice.  A quartet of Pride goalkeepers split time in net en route to picking up a team shutout.

Hollins will get back home tonight before boarding a bus to head to Atlanta for a pair of matches this weekend.  Hollins will go up against Agnes Scott on Saturday and then face Wesleyan (GA) on Sunday.
