Box Score Roanoke, VA - In a rare, February, non-conference matchup, Hollins played host to Southern Virginia University on Monday night. The game was rescheduled from earlier in the season due to the winter storm that blanketed the state. Hollins lead after one period, but the final 30 minutes belonged to the road team as the Knights picked up the 95-64 victory.
The first period was a back and forth affair that saw Hollins take a one point lead, 17-16, into the first break. The second quarter was dominated by the visitors as Southern Virginia opened up a 10 point lead at the 6:14 mark of the period. Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) hit a pair of free throws before the Knights closed the quarter on a 17-3 run.
Hollins did a much better job of attacking the rim in the second half and got into the bonus less than two minutes into the third frame. However, every time Hollins began to cut the deficit, the Knights would hit a three pointer to keep their sizable lead. Thanks in part to 7-14 shooting from behind the arc, Southern Virginia never let Hollins back into the game. 54.9% shooting and a 49-30 advantage on the glass allowed the visitors to leave town with the win.
Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) scored 10 of her game high 23 points in the first period but had to miss much of the first half due to foul trouble. Parfitt added 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and five steals before fouling out late. Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) netted eight points to go with four assists, and four steals while Porsha Waddey (Roanoke, VA) recorded four points and six rebounds.
Southern Virginia built their first half lead thanks in part to their inside duo of Larissa Macfarlane and Shelby Winsor. Macfarlane finished with 22 points and six rebounds with Winsor adding 17 and eight. Merideth Ouellette came off the becnh to hit 5-9 from long range en route to 15 points.
Hollins will be back in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action when they travel to Guilford on Wednesday night. Hollins will take on the conference leading Quakers at 7:00pm.
