The Lead:Â The Hollins basketball team was back at home to defend her home court in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday night. The Green and Gold hosted Randolph College looking to end a two-game ODAC losing streak and push their league mark back over .500 for the season. The HU defense was on full display, holding the WildCats to just four points in the opening quarter. Leading by eight, Hollins closed the first half on a 5-0 surge to take control of the game heading into the break. A three-pointer pushed the lead to 20 and when they scored the final seven points of the period, Hollins took a 27-point cushion into the last quarter and held on from there for a 51-26 conference win.
HighlightsÂ
- Jacorra Russell scored off the opening tip and after baskets by Zaria Holden and Gracie Huffard, Hollins was out to an early lead. The defense took over from there as HU would not allow a field goal by their guests on the way to a 14-4 lead.
- Hollins led 18-10 in the closing minutes of the first half. Holden hit a jump shot followed by free throws by Erin Allen and Kennedy Leggett to make it 23-10 at the break.
- Four points by Sarah Morales and a three-pointer by Missy Hazard put Hollins up by 22. Noelani Carter started and Leggett ended a 7-0 run to close the quarter.
- The Hollins defense held Randolph to just 15.5% from the field and forced 32 turnovers in picking up the 25-point ODAC win. The 21 steals by the Green and Gold were the most this season, eclipsing the 20 against Mary Baldwin.
- Russell finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, a block, and three steals. It was the second double-double of her first-year campaign. Gracie Huffard netted nine points, seven rebounds, and career high six blocks. Holden added six points, four assists, and 10 boards while Morales scored six with five steals. Carter handed out four assists and recorded five steals.
