Hollins Vs. Ferrum Round 3

Roanoke, VA -For the third time this season, the Hollins volleyball team faced off with Ferrum College.  Having been defeated by the Panthers at the Roanoke College Maroon Classic, Hollins traveled to Ferrum last Monday for the rematch.  The Panthers once again got the best of the matchup but this time the match would be held on Hollins home court.

The early going once again saw Ferrum enjoy the advantage when the visitors raced out to 10-5 lead.  Hollins started to mount a rally and forced a Ferrum timeout when they cut the Panthers lead to 15-13.  The road team responded to the break in the action by coming out and going on a 5-2 run to re-establish their cushion.  Hollins once again cut into the deficit but it wasn't enough as Ferrum earned a 25-20 opening game win.  Hollins got off to a much better start in game two.  Hollins lead throughout the opening stages of the game, but thanks to a 3-0 Panther run, the score was tied at 14-14.  Despite a Hollins timeout, the Panthers continued with the momentum and outscored their hosts, 11-5, the rest of the way to take a 2-0 lead.

Hollins once again controlled the action in the third, enjoying a their largest lead of the evening, 11-6.  But once again Ferrum began to chip away at the lead and eventually tied, the third and ultimately final, set at 14-14.  The Panthers looked to duplicate the previous game and once again seemed destined to finish of Hollins.  However, the home team dug deep and pulled back even at 23-23 late in the set.  Two straight Ferrum points gave the visitors the win and three match sweep of Hollins.

Senior setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) enjoyed a solid all-around effort with five kills, 21 assists, six digs, and a pair of blocks.  Middle Deja Hadden (Norfolk, VA)once again led the Hollins attack with eight kills on 19 attacks while fellow middle Amelia Eyles (Millwood, VA) added six kills and three blocks.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) and Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) combined fro 11 kills from the outside with Jordan Persinger (New Castle, VA) adding three blocks.

Ferrum was led by Hannah Helbert and her 12 kills.  Cheyenne Strickland also recorded double digit kills with 10 while handing out a match high 24 assists.

Hollins will be back at home on Thursday night when they play host to perennial ODAC power Randolph-Macon at 7:00pm.
