Box Score Virginia Beach, VA - The Hollins volleyball team made the four hour trek to the eastern shore when they traveled to Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday evening. The trip didn't get off to a good start when the team bus broke down just miles from campus. After arriving in Virginia Beach, things didn't get much better as Hollins and the Marlins had to endure a pair of power outages leaving the facility in the dark.
After surviving the long trip, Hollins was welcomed to a power outage during pregame warmups. From the opening of the first game Hollins struggled to get going, falling behind early. The road team was able to trim the lead to 16-9, but could get no closer as Virginia Wesleyan took the first set, 25-12. The second frame was more closely contested with the two teams locked in a tightly contested duel, 6-8. The home standing Marlins started to increase their lead when the gym once again went dark. After the power was restored, Hollins found themselves on the short end of a 25-14 second set score. Hollins fared much better in the third but it wasn't enough as Virginia Wesleyan completed the sweep of their ODAC foe, 25-18.
Deja Hadden (Norfolk, VA) continued her efficient first season by recording seven kills on just 15 attempts. Hadden added a pair of blocks while outside hitter Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) registered five kills and a service ace. Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) had 17 assists and six digs and fellow senior Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) had a team high 13 digs.
Tiffany Barrett led all players with 14 kills, 13 digs, and four service aces. Kristina Scott added nine kills with setters Emilee Pierson and Kristin Sessoms combining for 37 assists.
Hollins will make the long trip home and enjoy a weekend off before resuming play on Monday night. Hollins will host Ferrum College at 7:00pm, the third meeting with the Panthers this season.
