Hollins Faces Panthers On The Road

Box Score

Ferrum, VA - For the second time this season, Hollins squared off with Ferrum College.  Having fallen to the Panthers at the Maroon Classic, Hollins traveled to Ferrum in search of evening their record against their USA South foe.

The Panthers were able to sweep Hollins at the tournament and a quick start would be needed to turn the tables on their hosts.  Set one started with Hollins taking three out of the first four points, staking the visitors to the early lead they were hoping for.  Hollins built the lead to four, 8-4, before a Ferrum timeout.  After the stoppage, the home team found their groove and matched the 8-4 start with an identical run to tie the set at 12-12.  Six straight Panther points forced a Hollins timeout but the damage was done with the home team enjoying an 18-12 advantage.  Hollins couldn't make up the deficit as Ferrum took the opener 25-21.  The second set saw Ferrum race out to the early lead, 5-1, as the Panthers built their cushion to double digits, 14-4.  The lead was too much for Hollins to rally from as the road team fell, 25-13, and found themselves down two sets.  Behind the strength of a 52-27 advantage in kills,  Ferrum repeated the earlier sweep of Hollins by taking the third and final set, 25-18.

For the second consecutive match, first-year middle Deja Hadden (Norfolk, VA) led the Hollins offensive attack.  Hadden registered eight kills on just 15 attempts and added a pair of blocks.  Senior outside hitters Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) and Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) combined to record 11 kills and setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 21 assists to go with three kills, five digs, and a service ace.  Jessica Bradbury (Chesterfield, VA) served four more aces, giving the first-year a team high 11 aces on the season.
