Thriller In Greensboro

Box Score

Greensboro, NC - The Hollins volleyball team got their first taste of conference play on Wednesday night when they played host to the defending ODAC Champions from Washington and Lee.  After falling short to the Generals, Hollins traveled to North Carolina to face the Quakers of Guilford College on Saturday afternoon.

The home standing Quakers wasted little time in welcoming their visitors, racing out to a 12-4 lead in the opening set.  Hollins was able to slow down Guilford but couldn't cut into the deficit, falling 25-13.  Trailing one set to none, Hollins started to find their rhythm and as the second stanza entered its' final stages, found themselves with 24-22 advantage.  After a Quaker point, first-year middle Deja Hadden (Norfolk, VA) recorded her fifth kill of the set to secure a 25-23 win.  Hollins carried the mometum of their first taste of victory during conference play into the third frame.  The road team enjoyed another late set lead, 24-23, but Guilford quickly tied the set at 25-25.  Amelia Eyles (Millwood, VA) gave Hollins the lead and the home team couldn't rally, sending their attack into the net and giving Hollins a 2-1 lead.

Needing one more set to secure the all important ODAC win, Hollins couldn't continue the steady play that had earned them the advantage.  The Quakers won the fourth set by a comfortable 25-11 score, setting up a fifth and decisive, winner take all, set.  Hollins fell behind early, 10-4.  After securing a point to stop the Guilford run, Hollins couldn't get any closer and the home team finished off their guests, 15-5, to secure a thrilling 3-2, come from behind win.

Hadden experienced one of the best afternoons of her young collegiate career by registering 15 kills and seven blocks.  Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) did a little bit of everything for Hollins by adding four kills, 29 assists, 17 digs and a pair of blocks.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) posted eight kills, two assists, seven digs, and three blocks while Eyles finished the day with five kills, five digs, and three blocks.

Hollins will step out of conference on Monday when they travel to play Ferrum College for the second time this season.
