Hollins Plays Two In Tournament Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Salem, VA - The Hollins volleyball team played a pair of matches in their final tournament appearance of the early season.  After gaining a split on the opening day of the 2015 Roanoke College Maroon Classic, Hollins faced the tournament hosts before playing in the event finale against Meredith College on Saturday afternoon.

Hollins faced the Maroons for the second time in as many weeks, after hosting Roanoke in a scrimmage back on September 3rd.  Coming into the non-conference matchup, Hollins was looking to use the momentum they gained by splitting with Roanoke during the scrimmage.  However, the hosts from Salem came into play with a 9-0 record to start the season and after taking the first set, 25-14, the Maroons seemed poised to reach double digit wins to start the season.  Hollins battled and won some spectacular points, but in the end, their ODAC foes earned the win, 25-15 and 25-17, to continue their perfect start of the 2015 season.

Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) posted a solid all-around effort with five kills, 10 assists, three digs, and a block.  Deja Hadden (Norfolk, VA) led the team with six kills while Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) recorded a team high 12 digs.  Outside hitter Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) registered three kills, three assists, 10 digs, and a pair of blocks.

In the finale Hollins looked to earn a split for the weekend when they faced the Avenging Angels from Raleigh.  Meredith took advantage of a weary Hollins squad, playing their second match in a row, by completing a three set sweep and sending Hollins to a 1-3 mark for the tournament.

Hollins will begin conference play on Wednesday when they play host to the defending ODAC champs from Washington and Lee at 6:30pm
