Box Score Roanoke, VA - With Fall Break starting at the end of classes on Wednesday evening, the Hollins soccer team played host to Randolph College for the annual matchup of ODAC rivals. With a win, Hollins would tie the WildCats in the conference standings while Randolph looked to add to their win total.
Randolph College struck early, netting a goal at the 1:38 mark on of the opening half. Another quick WildCat goal pushed the lead to 2-0, Hollins settled down and started to play the defense that kept them in their last game at Shenandoah on Tuesday night. Delaney Doyle picked up her third point of the match when she passed over the Hollins defense to an open Kayla Kishbaugh to make the score 3-0. Hollins started to find their rhythm on the offensive end of the field but they were unable to net a first half goal and at the break found themselves on the short end of a 6-0 score.
Randolph enjoyed a 23-1 shot advantage during the first 45 minutes but the second half was a different story. Hollins stiffened up on the defensive side, allowing just a pair of second half tallies, while they were able to enjoy several good scoring opportunities. First-year midfielder Kally Saffer (Winston-Salem, NC) added to her team leading shot total by enjoying six scoring chances. However, the WildCat goalkeeper was up to the task, recording three second half saves.
Saffer directed three of her game high seven shots on the Randolph net, while just missing (high) on an indirect opportunity. Jhovanna Salmeron (Zebulon, NC) beat the WildCats down the right side but was unable to capitalize with a goal. After an 18 save effort against the Hornets, Hollins goalkeeperAudrey Haisley (Ashburn, VA) recorded 15 stops.
Doyle led Randolph with a goal and two assists. The WildCats registered eight goals by eight different players and Shelby Lutz made three stops en route to the shutout.
Hollins will be off until Wednesday when they welcome the defending NCAA DIII National Champions to town. Hollins will play host to Lynchburg College at 4:00pm.
