The Lead: Christendom made the trip to Roanoke to face Hollins on their home turf at Berkley Field on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders came into the matchup looking for their third consecutive win while the Green and Gold came into the meeting off a 5-1 season opening loss to Piedmont. Hollins would control much of the action for a majority of the afternoon. Despite out shooting their guests 17-13 (10-7 on goal) Hollins could not overcome an early Christendom score and fell to the Crusaders, 1-0.
Highlights
- Less than seven minutes after the opening kick, Christendom would get on the scoreboard when they split a pair of defenders and won the one-on-one battle with the keeper. The goal came after Lida Krodel and Evelyn Keefer combined for three shots in the first four minutes of action.
- HU had three scoring chances and six shots in a row but couldn't net the equalizer. Raynia Russell, Keefer, and Liah-Rae Tucker each challenged the Crusaders keeper but each time Serena Keller was up to the task.
- Hollins dominated play in the Christendom zone in a first half that saw the home team enjoy an 11-3 edge in shots (6-1 on goal).
- At the 55-minute mark, Isabella Byron had back-to-back scoring chances to the lower left part of the goal, but each were turned aside by Keller.
- Caylie Nichols had Hollins best chance of the afternoon, but her one-on-one battle with Keller went to the road team.
- Grace Glerum gave her team a chance with a pair of point-blank saves at the 84-minute mark. The senior recorded six stops for the game.
- Byron and Keefer each had three shots on goal. Hollins would see seven different players attempt shots.
