Cross Town Rivals Meet At Hollins

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - The annual cross-town matchup of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rivals took place on Monday night when Roanoke College traveled the six miles down interstate 81 to the Hollins campus.  The gym was all dressed in pink as Hollins held their Breast Cancer Awareness game versus the Maroons.  Roanoke College got the best of their rivals, taking the match 3-0.

The two ODAC foes traded points throughout the beginning stages of the match.  With the score tied, 9-9, the Maroons went on an 8-3 run to open up a five point advantage.  The visitors were able to keep their cushion and closed out the first set, 25-18.  The second stanza saw Roanoke race out to a quick 4-0 lead.  The home team could not cut into the early deficit and fell, 21-17, giving the Maroons a 2-0 advantage.  Any thoughts of a Hollins rally was thwarted as Roanoke took control of the game in the first several points.  Roanoke didn't give their hosts much of a chance by building their lead throughout the set and closing out Hollins, 25-15.

Senior Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) paced Hollins with 10 kills on 29 attempts while adding nine digs and a block.  Deja Hadden (Norfolk, VA) added eight kills, an assist, a service ace, and a block and Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out a team high 20 assists.

Kylah Blackmore recorded a match high 16 kills with Sydney Daniel adding nine for a Roanoke team that enjoyed a 45-28 advantage at the net.  Jessica Block added 35 assists, 14 digs, and a pair of service aces.

Hollins will wrap up their home schedule tomorrow night when they step out of conference to host Salem College.  Hollins goes for the home and home sweep of the Spirits at 7:00pm.
