Box Score Roanoke, VA - The Hollins volleyball team played their first of back to back Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matches by hosting Lynchburg College on Friday night. The Hornets won the first two sets and then had to stave off a Hollins rally in the third to take the ODAC matchup.
Hollins got a slow start, watching their visitors win the first four points of the night. Hollins stopped the Hornets, but only momentarily, as Lynchburg took the opener, 25-11. The home team continued to struggle at the net, only five kills in the first set, as the second game got started. The Hornets used another big advantage in kills, 12-5, to take a 2-0 lead against their ODAC rivals. With their backs against the wall, Hollins battled Lynchburg point for point throughout much of the third set. After each team enjoying time in front the set was tied for the eighth and final time at 20-20. The visitors won the next five points to end Hollins chance at a comeback and took the match, 3-0.
Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) and Deja Hadden (Norfolk, VA) each recorded five kills to lead the Hollins offense. Martinez added eight digs while setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) added 11 assists, three kills, and three digs.
Lynchburg used a 43-20 kill advantage in earning the three set sweep. Jennifer Garrett killed 17 of her match high 32 attacks with Kelly Layne adding 10. Lynn Walsh handed out 29 assists while Garrett and Sam Page combined for 28 digs.
Hollins will look to go 1-1 over the weekend when they play host to Randolph College tomorrow afternoon. The match with the WildCats is scheduled to start at 2:00pm but before the start, Hollins will take a few moments to honor her six seniors. Martinez, Moore, Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA), Amelia Eyles (Millwood, VA), Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA), and Jordan Persinger (New Castle, VA) will be recognized for their achievements and contributions to the Hollins volleyball program.
