Box Score Bridgewater, VA - For the first time since taking the reins of the Hollins volleyball program, head coach Kat Lawson returned to her alma mater to face Bridgewater College. Hollins made the trip fresh off a 3-1 win over Salem College and looked to put together a win streak as the conference season hit it's midway point.
Hollins got out to a slow start and the home team took full advantage, buildiong an early 10-3 lead. Hollins was able to stop the Eagle run, but could not gain any momentum as Bridgewater took the first set, handily, 25-8. Game two once again saw the Eagles soar out to a big early lead, 18-4. Hollins started to play much better but after two sets, Bridgewater enjoyed a 25-4 advantage in kills while building 2-0 lead. The third set was much more tightly contested, with the match being tied at 4-4 and again at 8-8. However the Eagles continued to out hit their visitors and as the match came to a close, Bridgewater had earned the ODAC victory. The Eagles took full advantage of their visitors miscues, 17 attack and 14 receiving errors, to pick up their third conference win of the season while Hollins has to come back home and regroup with back to back ODAC matches on the schedule.
Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) led Hollins with three kills while Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out a team high six assists. Libero Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) registered nine digs with Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) and Deja Hadden (Norflok, VA) each recoding a service ace.
Bridgewater won the battle at the net by putting away 42 attacks as opposed to their opponents nine. Deja Booker led the Eagles with eight kills while Danielle McKelvey added seven. Jenna Hamra and Carleigh Studtmann combined for 26 assists.
Hollins will host Lynchburg College on Friday night before a rematch with Randolph College on Satruday afternoon.
