Greensboro Tournament Come To A Close

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Greensboro, NC - Sunday marked the final day of the Greensboro College Tournament.  Hollins had a chance to pick up a pair of wins as they faced off with Agnes Scott College before playing in the tournament finale against their hosts, the Greensboro College Pride.

In their first match of the day, Hollins got exactly what they were looking for, a quick start.  Hollins cruised past the Scotties in the first set, 25-19.  The second set was much closer as both teams traded points back and forth.  This time around it was Agnes Scott that reached 25 points first but considering they had to win by two, Hollins had a chance to extend the match.  Trailing by one, Hollins played what proved to be their final point of the set as the Scotties evened the match.  Hollins once again gained the upper hand by pulling away in a close third set to take a 2-1 lead.  With a chance to put the set away, Hollins faltered and it would take a fifth set to decide the winner.  Hollins fell behind early and were not able to close the gap as Agnes Scott came away with a hard fought, 3-2, victory.

Senior middle Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) led a 55 kill effort by Hollins.  Hays led the way by putting away 16 of her 30 attacks while adding three blocks at the net.  Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) recorded 11 kills to go with a service ace and 17 digs.  Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out a match high 42 assists and Jordan Persinger (New Castle, VA) helped Hollins control the net with six kills and three blocks.

The finale pitted Hollins against tournament host Greensboro College.  Hollins needed to defeat the Pride in order to avoid being swept over the four match, two day event.

Hollins started the match still stinging for their tough loss earlier in the afternoon and fell to Greensboro, 25-17, in the opening set.  Hollins quickly bounced back and thanks to a 13 kill effort, Hollins evened the match.  The next two sets were tightly contested with each team enjoying the advantage.  However, in the end it was the Pride that prevailed by taking the third and fourth sets by the identical score, 25-22.

Hays once again led the way for Hollins with 12 kills, a dig, and a pair of blocks.  Persinger added nine kills and two blocks as Hollins more than held their own at the net.  Moore assisted on 31 of the teams 47 kills while libero Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) recorded a match high 24 digs on the back row.

Hollins will play at home after opening the season with eight matches away from Their Roanoke campus.  Hollins will host Ferrum College on Wednesday night at 7:00pm.
