Box Score 2 Greensboro, NC - The Hollins University volleyball team found themselves competing in their second tournament in as many weekends to start the season. Saturday saw the team travel to Greensboro to compete in the two day, four match, Greensboro College Tournament. Hollins faced a familiar foe in their first match when the faced off with Guilford College before ending the first day with USA South member Piedmont College.
Hollins and the Quakers traded one another point for point during the beginning of the match. With both teams earning 12 points via the kill, it was Guilford that made a few less mistakes and took the first set, 25-16. Hollins was able to continue their good play at the net and road a 10 kill effort to even the match with a 25-23 second set victory. Looking to capitalize on their momentum, Hollins embarked in yet another tight set but this time it was Guilford to pulled away late and took a two sets to one lead into the pivotal fourth set. A weary Hollins squad started to falter in the heat and couldn't complete a comeback by falling to their ODAC rival 25-16 in the final set.
Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) led a balanced Hollins attack with nine kills and 14 digs. Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) added eight kills and 11 digs while setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out a match high 30 assists.
In the night cap, Hollins faced off with a Piedmont College team that had picked up their fourth victory of the season earlier in the afternoon. In a gym that was approaching the 100 degree mark, Hollins battled point for point with the Lions and held a 21-20 lead late in the set. After a timeout, Piedmont came out and quickly regained the momentum and rattled off five of the matches next six points to take the set, 25-22. The heat and deep Piedmont roster started to take its' toll on Hollins and over the next two sets the Lions pulled away to sweep Hollins. It marked the first time Hollins had been swept, 3-0, this season.
Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) led Hollins at the net with seven kills. Moore had a pretty solid all around effort with five kills, nine assists, seven digs, and a pair of blocks. After recording 14 digs in the first match, Libero Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) led the way with 13 digs.
Hollins will wrap up play tomorrow with a pair of matches. Hollins will face Agnes Scott and host Greensboro College as the go looking to earn split over the two day event.
