Hollins Can't Overcome First Half Outburst

Roanoke, VA - For just the third time this month, the Hollins soccer team defended their home turf when they played host to Emory & Henry College on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon.  Both teams came into the matchup looking for their first conference win of the season.

The Hollins defense got tested from the opening kick.  The Wasps controlled much of the action during the opening stages of the match but could not crack the Hollins defense.  At the 18 minute mark Emory & Henry finally solved the Hollins riddle and broke through with the first goal of the match.  Hollins had a chance on the very next possession but the kick by Christina Havrila (Ruckersville, VA) sailed just wide of the Emory & Henry net.  Less than a minute later, Jhovanna Salmeron (Zebulon, NC) found herself behind the Wasp defense and had a golden opportunity against the E&H keeper.  However the defense rallied to force the shot wide of the goal.  The Wasps were able to again turn the field on their hosts and netted another goal just after the midway point of the first half.  Fatigue began to set in and Hollins began to wilt under the constant pressure.  Three Emory & Henry goals in a three and a half minute span proved to be the crushing blow tot he Hollins spirit and gave the visitors a 5-0 lead at the break.  The second half was played at a little slower pace but Hollins was unable to put a dent into the lead.  The Wasps added a couple of late goals to make the final score 8-0.

Havrila and Salmeron led the Hollins offensive attack in their most productive outing to date.  Sophomore Megan McKee (Madison, AL) once again made several highlight reel saves.  25 more saves for McKee has her at an even 100 for the season and sitting atop the ODAC rankings by more than 50 saves.

April Yopp scored three goals in a three and a half minute span to all but put the game away for Emory & Henry.  Blair Vaughn added a pair of goals while Bethany Myer, Emily Belanger, and Allie Hooper each scored once.  Christina Ameen handed out a pair of assists and Becca Hansen went the distance in goal en route to the shutout.

Hollins will be back on their home field this Saturday when Randolph-Macon comes to Roanoke for a 2:00pm start.
