Box Score 2 Salem, VA - Hollins had an early start on the second day of the 2014 Maroon Classic hosted by Roanoke College. Meredith College was the opponent as Hollins opened the day after finishing up less than 12 hours from their last match. After doing battle with the Avenging Angels, Hollins would finish their tournament play with a rematch against Ferrum College.
Hollins started a little slow against Meredith as the fell behind and never really got going in dropping the first set. After getting their legs loose, Hollins begin to play much better as the morning went on. Hollins raced out to an early lead and kept the Angels at arms length en route to taking the second frame, 25-15. In the third set, Meredith re-established themselves as the match favorites and downed Hollins 25-15. With their backs against the wall, Hollins fell behind early but mounted a rally that saw the match tied at 20-20. However, Hollins couldn't capitalize on their momentum as Meredith rattled off the next five points to take the match 3-1.
Three different players, Jessie Deese (Cary, NC), Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX), and Jordan Persinger (New Castle, VA), each registered five kills. Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) assisted on 18 of Hollins 22 kills and Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) led the team with a match high 14 digs.
In their final match of the two day event, Hollins faced off with the same Ferrum College team that they defeated in their home opener on Wednesday night.
After blitzing the Panthers in the first set on Wednesday, Hollins struggled to get started as Ferrum took the opening set, 25-15. Ferrum rode their early momentum and even though Hollins played much better, it was the Panthers that took the second set and a 2-0 lead. It what appeared to be the match finale, Hollins rallied late to take the set by the narrowest of margins, 25-23. Hoping to force a fifth set, Hollins traded points with their opponent but in the end it was Ferrum that turned the tables and defeated Hollins 3-1.
Ortiz, the reigning Hollins Student-Athlete of the Week, once again led Hollins with 17 digs. Hays enjoyed a nice afternoon at the net with 10 kills and a block to go with her four service aces. Deese added five kills and Moore recorded 21 assists.
This weekend marked the final of three tournaments that Hollins competed in to start the season. Hollins will open ODAC play next week as they play host to Emory & Henry on Tuesday night.
