Box Score 2 Danville, VA - Day two of the 2014 Cougar Classic saw Hollins looking to rebound from a pair of tough defeats on Saturday. Hollins would have a pair of opportunities to pick up their first win of the new season as the played ODAC rival Randolph College in the morning before playing William Peace in their tournament finale later Sunday afternoon.
Hollins looked to draw "first blood" against their conference foe WildCats. However it was Randolph that gained the upper hand after a 25-17 win in the opening set. After gaining their footing, Hollins put up a much tougher front in the second set but it wasn't enough as the WildCats gained a 2-0 advantage after winning the set, 25-20. Hollins wouldn't go away and in the third set it was Hollins that gained an advantage and rode it to a convincing 25-16 victory. Randolph needed to stop the Hollins momentum but it wouldn't be easy as the set remained tight throughout. In the end, Randolph was too much for Hollins and won the fourth set 25-21 to take the match and drop Hollins to 0-3 to start the season.
With one last match left to play in the two day event, Hollins would need to pick up a win against William Peace to earn a split on Sunday and carry some much needed momentum back to Roanoke.
The first set went the way of the Pacers and after a crushing, 11-25, defeat in the second frame, Hollins found themselves in a desperate hole. Faced with the choice of fighting back or giving up, Hollins dug deep and started the slow climb back into the match. Having not been swept in the tournament, Hollins found away to take the third set, 25-19, and keep their hopes alive heading into the fourth set. Hollins and William Peace engaged in a back and forth duel that went past the necessary 25 points to win the set. When the dust settled it was Hollins that came away with the win by the narrowest of margins, 26-24. For just the fourth time in the 20 match tournament, a fifth set was needed to determine the victor. The Pacers pushed Hollins once again past the limit as the match was tied at 15-15 with neither team being able to pick up the needed two point advantage for the win. The teams traded points but a late Hollins surge allowed the team to pick up their first victory of the season by taking the decisive set 20-18.
For the tournament Hollins won seven of the 18 sets that they played and will carry their 1-3 record back on the road next weekend as they play four more matches in the Greensboro College Invitational Tournament.
