Box Score Winchester, VA - The Hollins University volleyball team continued their season ending road show with a trip to Shenandoah University on Thursday night. The match against the Hornets was the ODAC finale for both schools, with just a trip to Bluefield for a tri match left on the schedule.
Hollins struggled to get going at the beginning of the match. Shenandoah scored the first six points of the set en route to building a 12-1 lead. From that point on, Hollins began to handle the Hornet serve much better and slowly closed the gap. The early deficit was too much to overcome and Shenandoah took a 1-0 lead by winning the first set, 25-11. Hollins once again fell behind to start the second set. However, the visitors started to mount a late rally and after winning three straight points, tied the set at 23-23. A well placed Hornet timeout allowed the home team to stop the Hollins run with a side out. Hollins was unable to handle the Shenandoah serve and as the ball fell to the floor, Hollins had lost a hard fought second set, 25-23. The way the third set started, it seemed as if Hollins was going to be unable to recover from the tough second set loss. Just when it seemed as if Hollins was going to be sent packing early, the road team started to battle back and close the gap. Hollins came all the way back and once again found themselves making a late run. This time, not only did Hollins tie the match, 24-24, but took a one point lead and served for the set. The Hornets staved off set point and then put Hollins on the brink of elimination. Shenandoah closed out the set on a 3-0 run to take the match with a 27-25 final set victory.
Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) registered a solid all around effort with four kills, 22 assists, and a pair of blocks. Seniors Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) and Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) recorded nine kills apiece. Hays added three blocks and Deese picked up nine digs. Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) once again lead Hollins with her match high 14 digs.
Rachel Gross led the Hornets at the net with 13 kills on her Senior Night. Samantha Schambach added eight kills while Jasmine Callahan led the way with 20 assists.
Hollins will close out the 2014-15 season with a trip to Bluefield State on Saturday afternoon. Hollins plays Bluefield College at noon before finishing up with Bluefield State at 2:00pm.
