Box Score Ferrum, VA - As the calendar nears the end of October, the Hollins volleyball team entered their final week of regular season play with a trip, out of conference, to Ferrum College. It marked the third time that Hollins had faced the Panthers this season, with each school holding a victory over the other.
Hollins was able to take the lead early into the first set before the home standing Panthers rallied back to tie the score at 7-7. The match went back and forth over the next several points until Ferrum gained the momentum and pulled away by three points. Hollins battled back but couldn't cut into their hosts lead and fell 25-19 in the opener. The second set once again saw Hollins enjoy an early lead. This time the visitors wouldn't allow the Panthers to get any sort of run going and continued to stretch out their advantage. A late Ferrum flurry closed the gap but Hollins prevailed, 25-20, to tie the match. The third set was a classic volleyball battle with each team enjoying several advantages during play. Hollins started slowly but a mid-set push brought the lead back to the visitors side. Ferrum was able to get back into the match and as the pivotal set came to a close it was tied at 24-24. Hollins had a chance to take the lead but the Panther net play enabled the home team to take a one point lead. Hollins was unable to stop the Ferrum comeback and found themselves down two sets to one. A weary Hollins squad was unable to garner any sort of momentum in the fourth and final set as Ferrum enjoyed a 25-16 victory taking the season series two matches to one.
Hollins more than held their own at the net as senior Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) and junior Jordan Persinger (New Castle, VA) each enjoyed double digit kill nights. Hays led the way with a match high 14 kills while her fellow middle added 10. Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) added four kills, 25 assists, three service aces, and seven digs. Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) registered 12 digs and Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) had a team high 13.
Ashley Ammann led the Panthers with 13 kills while Leteashia Clarke added nine and Ebony Crawford had eight. Emily Danner handed out a match high 27 assists and libero Sarah Hendrix recorded a team high 23 digs.
Hollins will close out ODAC play on Thursday night with a trip to Shenandoah University. The match with the Hornets is scheduled to start at 6:30pm.
