Roanoke, VA - The Hollins University soccer team played on home turf for the final time on a beautiful, fall Wednesday afternoon when Shenandoah University came to town for an ODAC match. The Hornets came into the game looking to improve their standing for the upcoming ODAC Women's Soccer Tournament while Hollins was hoping for an elusive conference win.
The match got off to a rocky start for the home team as Shenandoah netted a goal just two minutes into the game. Another Hornet tally came 45 seconds later as the visitors raced out to a 2-0 advantage. The Hollins defense began to regain control of their zone and the match went scoreless for over 20 minutes. However, the Hornets weren't done as they continued to apply offensive pressure. Four more Shenandoah goals gave the road team a comfortable 6-0 lead at the break. The second half started with the Hornets again lighting the board early with a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of play. Hollins was able to gain some offensive zone time but the Hornet keepers kept Hollins from cutting into the lead. As the final horn sounded, Hollins had fallen in their final home game, 11-0.
Senior Bonnie Jo Blevins (Mars Hill, NC) led the Hollins offense. Blevins had a couple of opportunities but each time was stopped by the Shenandoah goalkeepers. Her best opportunity came from straight on in the second half but couldn't get the ball past the Shenandoah defensive line. Keeper Megan McKee (Madison, AL) recorded 23 saves, her ninth double digit save effort in 10 games.
Backup goal keeper Rebecca Angerome played over 20 minutes in net, recording one save. Angerome then renter the contest as a striker and netted three goals. Averi Rosena added two goals and an assist while six other Hornets registered single goals. A trio of keepers combined for the shut out.
Hollins will finish their 2014-15 season on the road for their final two ODAC contests. Hollins will travel to face Randolph College on Saturday afternoon.
