Ashland, VA - Thursday night marked the first of back to back road games for a Hollins volleyball team that traveled to Ashland looking for their first conference win of the season. Hollins first opponent on the two day, overnight trip was ODAC leading Randolph-Macon College. The Yellow Jackets were looking to run their conference mark to 5-0 and to keep pace with Washington and Lee atop the ODAC standings.
Hollins needed to get off to a quick start over the heavily favored Yellow Jackets. However it was the home team that took control of the match in early stages. Randolph-Macon made a statement in the opening set as the cruised to a 25-14 victory. The second set saw Hollins finding their legs after the long bus ride. Hollins and Randolph-Macon traded the lead throughout a set that never saw either team lead by more than three points. With the scored tied at 24-24, the Yellow Jackets earned the first match point. Hollins again tied the score as the set headed into "overtime". In the end it was the home team that put together the first two point run to take the closely contested set, 27-25. In the third, and what proved to be the final set, Hollins could not recover from the heartbreaking prior loss and fell to the Yellow Jackets, 25-11.
Junior outside hitter Rikki Martinez (Corpus Christi, TX) led Hollins at the net with eight kills as well as helping to protect the back line with nine digs. Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) matched Martinez with eight kills while adding a pair of service aces. Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) handed out 19 assists and Haley Ortiz (Portsmouth, VA) added 14 digs to her ODAC leading total.
Courtney Lowers dominated play at the net by recording 18 kills on her 40 attacks. Erin Quinn and Bailey Troia combined for 37 assists.
Hollins will wrap up their trip on Friday night when they face off with Virginia Wesleyan College at 6:00pm.
