Harrisonburg, VA - Saturday afternoon marked the first of back to back road conference games for a Hollins squad that goes into the weekend battered and beaten by the long grueling season. Hollins traveled to face Eastern Mennonite University in an ODAC matchup.
Looking to defend their home turf, the Royals struck first as they netted the matches first goal less than seven minutes into the contest. Eastern Mennonite once again found the back of the Hollins net less than two minutes later and found themselves with a 2-0 lead. The Hollins defense began to fend off their attackers but 10 minutes later once again found themselves begining to break down. The Royals added a pair of goals in a one minute stretch to push their lead to four. As the half reached it's midway point, the home time was once again lighting the scoreboard and after just 25 minutes of play, the score was Eastern Mennonite, six, Hollins, zero. Two more Mennonite goals late in the first half gave the home team a comfortable 8-0 advantage at the break.
The second half started quickly for the Royals as they scored two more goals in the opening minutes of the second frame. The Eastern Mennonite offense finally began to slow down as neither team found the net again during the second half. As the final horn blew, Eastern Mennonite had defended its home field with a 10-0 ODAC victory.
Playing shorthanded and trying to stay back on defense, Hollins did not spend any significant time in the EMU zone. Hollins was unable to find their scoring touch as the Royals enjoyed a huge advantage in shots. Keeper Audrey Haisley (Ashburn, VA) and her defensive teammates did their best to slow down the Eastern Mennonite attack. Haisley recorded nine saves on the afternoon.
Seven different Royals netted goals led by three tallies from Rachel Breidigan while Sara Shenk Moreno added a goal and an assist. Brianna Stanard started the match in goal and gave way to Becca Borg in the second half as the duo combined for the shutout.
Hollins will once again find themselves on the road as they travel to Washington and Lee next week. The match with the Generals is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:00pm.
