Box Score ROANOKE, Va. - Yogi Berra once famously said, "It gets late early out there."
There's a good chance he could have been talking about Hollins basketball as HU fell behind visiting Shenandoah, 19-9, after the first quarter and couldn't recover as the Hornets took the regular season finale 63-48.
How It Happened
The first quarter was a combination of cold and hot, with Hollins (11-14, 5-13 ODAC) shooting just 4-14, including 0-3 from three, while Shenandoah (16-9, 12-6 ODAC) shot 62% from the field. Yasmine Tyler made the games first bucket at the 9:14 mark and then HU was kept off the board for almost four minutes, until Tyler hit another layup.
Lenah Clements led off the second with a jumper and the two teams traded baskets throughout until Hollins ended the quarter on a 4-2 run, with baskets from Tyler and Keyazia Taylor, to trail 27-19 at the half.
SU started the third quarter on a 14-3 run until Kayla Surles hit the Green and Gold's first three of the game. Trailing 44-25, HU went on an 11-0 run of their own to bring the game within eight before Shenandoah ended the period with five straight points. Hollins had no answer in the fourth either, as they shot just 14% from three and 27% from the field.
Tyler picked up her third double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Kayla Surles scored a game-high 18 points and Clements added 11.
What's Next
Hollins will get ready for the ODAC tournament, as they'll be either the field's #9 or #10 seed. They'll head to either Guilford or Lynchburg on Monday for a play-in game and a chance to take on the field at the Salem Civic Center.
