Box Score Salem, VA - After having to adjust the schedule due to an unplayable facility, Hollins traveled to Roanoke College to face the Maroons as the two long time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foes switched the location of their first of two cross town matchups.
Hollins got off to a slow start as a pair of early turnovers allowed Roanoke to race out to an early advantage. Every time the Maroons started to pull away, Hollins hit a timely basket to keep the game close. With just seconds remaining, Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) notched one of her game high six steals and converted it into a quarter ending hoop to pull the visitors to within four, 12-16. During the early stages of period number two, Roanoke used a 7-0 run to stretch their lead to double digits for the first time. Hollins stopped the run but couldn't regain control of the game as the Maroons took a 16 point advantage into the break.
The third period would see Hollins began to find an answer to the Roanoke zone and begin to score more easily. However, the home team would not allow Hollins to get any closer than 15 points and carried a 19 point advantage into the fourth and final quarter. With 4:10 left to play, senior Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) converted a pair of free throws to pull Hollins to within 12. Hollins could not close the gap further and fell, 70-54, to their Roanoke Valley rivals.
Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) led a quartet of Hollins players in double digits with a game high 17 points. The senior added seven rebounds and five steals while first-year post player Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) added 16 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Valencia finished with 11 points, three assists, and six steals with Smith recording 10 points and three assists.
Cary Beahm led a balanced Raonoke attack that saw six different players score at least eight points. Beahm, a 2015 All ODAC 2nd teamer, registered team highs in points, 14, and rebounds, nine.
Hollins will travel on Saturday to face Randolph-Macon at 2:00pm.
