Box Score Roanoke, VA - After playing host to the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champions on Saturday, Hollins was back defending their home court against the Guilford Quakers on Wednesday night. Guilford came into the game after suffering their first conference loss of the season while sitting in second place behind ODAC leading Lynchburg College.
The visitors from Greensboro raced out to a 6-0 lead, forcing head coach Jenny Logan to take an early timeout. After the opening run, Hollins settled down and scored three straight to get right back in the game. The Hollins defense let them down in the opening period as Guilford enjoyed a 21-11 lead heading into the second quarter of play. Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) started the second frame scoring five straight to cut the deficit to six points early in the period. The Hollins defense started to make things hard on their guests and after a fairly even 10 minutes, the Quakers took a 33-22 advantage into the break.
After a quick Guilford hoop pushed the lead to 13, Hollins started to take control of the game. From that point on, Hollins outscored their ODAC foe 18-12 to cut the deficit to seven points, 47-40, heading into the fourth and final quarter of play. At the 3:44 mark, Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) scored her 15th point of the game to cut the lead to just five points, 56-51. However, the size of Guilford led to a pair of offensive rebounds leading to four second chance points to push the lead back to double-digits. A late three pointer by Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) got Hollins to within nine, but the clock continued to wind towards 00:00 and Hollins had run out of time as Guilford left with a 65-54 ODAC victory.
Smith paced the home team with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) added 13 points while Parfitt and Valencia each netted 10. Parfitt grabbed a team high six rebounds while recording a game high four steals.
Lauren Ramsey had an answer each time Hollins cut into the lead with a game high 21 points. All ODAC performer Anais Weatherly was held in chack and despite struggling from the field, finished with a double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds. Guilford used theiir considerable size advantage to dominate the glass, 46-33, including 18 offensive rebounds.
Hollins will go on the road on Saturday as they continue their brutal ODAC stretch when they travel to Eastern Mennonite. The Royals were picked second in the 1015-16 ODAC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll and currently sit in third place in the conference.
