Box Score Winchester, VA - With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Hollins basketball team went on the road to face Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon. Looking to build some late season momentum, Hollins went in search of exacting a bit of revenge against a Hornet team that bested Hollins earlier in the season.
The road team didn't get the start they were hoping for as Shenandoah raced out to a 6-0 lead. Hollins got on the board with an Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) layup. Over the next several minutes of play, the two ODAC foes played even and with 11:20 to go before the break, the Hornets led 14-6. Hollins started to get hot from long range and after Giselle Verville (Charlotte, NC) hit a shot from behind the arc, the game was tied at 16-16. Over the final 4:22 of the half, Hollins outscored Shenandoah 6-4 to take a two point lead into halftime.
Over the past several games Hollins has seen early second half runs by their opponents to push the game out of reach. Today, Hollins turned the tables and after Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) connected from the three point line, it was Hollins that started the second frame with a 10-0 run. The visitors continued to build the lead over the Hornets and with 12:23 left to play Hollins had built an 18 point lead. Just as it appeared that Hollins would cruise to an ODAC victory, Shenandoah began to battle back. Hollins had to have flashbacks of a pair of early games that saw them lose double digit, second half leads. With 1:16 left on the clock, Holly Chittenden hit a jumper to pull the Hornets to within three points, 46-43. However, Hollins hit eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to put the game away and pick up a much needed, 54-48, ODAC win.
Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) led all scorers with 15 points. The sophomore guard added nine rebounds and four steals while fellow second year player Kaitlyn Taylor (Gastonia, NC) posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Senior Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) came off the bench to score 13 points with Catron adding nine points, eight rebounds, and a team leading four assists.
Chittenden paced the Hornets with 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and a block shot. Kirstyn Arcata recorded 12 points and eight rebounds and Olivia Callen scored eight.
Hollins will look to build some momentum heading into ODAC Tournament season when they welcome cross town rival Roanoke College on Wednesday night. The game with the Maroons is the regular season home finale for Hollins and will tip at 7:00pm.
