Box Score Roanoke, VA -After opening the season with a loss to Dickinson, Hollins hosted Mary Baldwin on Saturday afternoon. Hollins looked to even their record while the game marked the season opener for the Squirrels. Intense defense led Hollins to a big early lead en route to picking up their first win of the season, 61-37.
Hollins held their visitors from Satunton to just five first quarter points after opening the game on 12-1 run. First year post player Raevyn Allen (Manhattan Beach, CA) hit a late jumper to give Hollins a 16-5 advantage. Allen finished the quarter with six of her 12 first half points. The second stanza once again saw the home team use their defense to control the game while increasing the lead throughout the second 10 minutes. A pair of Allen free throws made the halftime score 35-11.
The second half started with neither team being able to find their range on the offensive end of the floor. Mary Baldwin improved its' defensive play, holding Hollins scoreless, as the Squirrels enjoyed a 6-0 advantage over the first six minutes of second half play. However, Hollins started to turnover Mary Baldwin and convert those miscues into easy baskets as the home team once again started build onto their lead. Despite their lowest scoring period of the afternoon, Hollins still held a sizable advantage. One big Hollins spurt to start the fourth put the game away as Hollins earned their first win of the season and giving their first year head coach, Jenny Logan, her first career win.
Leading scorer Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) followed up her 14 point effort last night with her first double-double of the season. Parffitt scored a game high 15 points to go with 12 rebounds and three assists to pace Hollins. Allen added 12 points, four rebounds, and a blocked shot while fellow post player Jordan Persinger (New Castle, VA) came off the bench to register six points and 12 rebounds. Hollins enjoyed a 65-43 advantage on the boards thanks in part to three different players with double digit rebounds, Parfitt, Persinger, and Deana Campbell (Nashville, TN) who grabbed a game high 13 caroms.
Rakeema Willis and Kaybria Johnson combined to score 24 of Mary Baldwin's 37 points.
Hollins will play its' third straight home game when the host Shenandoah University on Tuesday night. The game will not count in the conference standings as the Horents travel to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm tip.
