Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough

Box Score

Salem, VA - For the first of two times this season, Hollins faced off with their cross town rivals from Roanoke College.  Hollins traveled to Salem in search of their first ODAC road victory of the season.  Both teams turned in impressive defensive efforts, but despite playing the Maroons even in almost every statistical category, Hollins fell to their neighbors 62-50.

The game started with Roanoke gaining the upper hand during the opening minutes of play.  Hollins rallied to tie the score, in a tightly contested first 20 minutes.  Both team employed an effective zone defense that troubled their opponent.  Neither team could gain any sort of advantage and at the 6:12 mark the game was tied at 17-17.  The home standing Maroons took advantage of some late Hollins turnovers and missed shots to score nine of the last 11 points of the half and took a 26-19 lead into the break.  Both teams struggled to find their range against the other's defense as the two teams combined to shoot just 30.7% from the floor.

The Maroons hit the first shot of the second half but after back to back three pointers by Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) and Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA), Hollins found themselves within just three points, 28-25.  Ever time Roanoke looked like they were going to pull away, their visitors would quickly trim the lead to five or six points.  However, the Maroons finally pushed the lead to double digits when they took a 45-35 advantage with just 6:33 remaining to play.  The ODAC foes would trade baskets for much of the rest of the game and when the final horn sounded, it was Roanoke that won the first matchup.

Hollins was led by a trio of players with 10 points apiece.  Catron, Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) and Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) combined for 30 of Hollins 50 points.  Campbell added a game high 14 rebounds, two assists, and a steal.  Parfitt battled early foul trouble to post seven points, three rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots.  Eight combined points by Hannah Moss (Mt. Holly, NC) and Kaitlyn Taylor (Gastonia, NC) helped Hollins enjoy an 11-6 point advantage over the Roanoke reserves.

Cary Beahm hit 10 of her 16 shots en route to scoring a game high 23 points.  Beahm added seven rebounds, four on the offensive glass.  Markia Beckwith was the only other Maroon in double figures with 11 points.

Hollins will look to avenge an earlier road loss the Bridgewater College when the Eagles come to town for a Saturday afternoon clash.  The tip versus the Eagles is scheduled for 2:00pm.
