Second Half Victory Not Enough

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - The Hollins University basketball team played their second game in as many days when they played host to Sewanee on Saturday afternoon.  Hollins struggled from the field in the first half for the second home game in a row as the Tigers built a big halftime lead.  The home team played much better and won the second half but it wasn't enough as Hollins fell, 75-57.

After falling to ODAC foe Randolph College in a non-conference matchup, Hollins hosted the University of the South looking to break their current losing streak.  Hollins scored the game's first three points but couldn't but a basket, going scoreless for the next 10 minutes of play.  Sewanee didn't have an easy time besting the Hollins defense but the Tigers were able to slowly build a 10 point advantage.  Hollins continued to struggle and with only minutes left in the first half, Hollins found themselves shooting less than 10% from the field.  If not for senior Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) and her 2-5 first half shooting, Hollins would have failed to crack the 10% mark.  Campbell scored eight of Hollins 16 points during the game's first 20 minutes as Sewanee took a 36-16 lead into the break.

Hollins came out and fared much better during the second frame from the offensive end of the floor.  Campbell and her backcourt mates, Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) and Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) started to find their range by attacking the basket and getting some nice open looks from the perimeter.  The trio combined for 36 second half points and Hollins cut the Tiger advantage to 47-59 with 6:03 left on the clock.  The Tigers didn't allow the home team to get any closer and closed out the game for the non-conference victory.

Campbell led Hollins with 22 points, eight rebounds, and five steals.  Catron continued her nice offensive run by netting 16 points and handing out a game high seven assists.  After not connected from the field in the first half, Parfitt finished with 10 points, three assists, and four steals.  First-year forward Alexis Banaszak (DeWitt, MI) came off the bench to add three points and four rebounds.

Sewanee used their dominate size, five different players over six foot, to enjoy a 46-33 advantage on the glass.  Hannah McCormack led the Tigers with 22 points, six rebounds, and four steals.  Jamie Chauvin added 17 points while Rebekah Faulkner came off the bench to score 10 points and grab four rebounds.

Hollins will close out their first semester schedule when ODAC foe Washington and Lee comes to town.  The Generals and Hollins will tip on Tuesday night at 7:00pm.  Due to the unbalanced conference schedule the game on Tuesday night will not be considered an ODAC matchup.
