Box Score Roanoke, VA - The Hollins basketball team was back in action after the Thanksgiving break. Hollins played host to Shenandoah University as both teams were looking for their first ODAC win of the season. Poor first half shooting put Hollins in a hole that they were unable to dig themselves out of as the Hornets came away with the conference victory.
Shenandoah scored the first five points of the game before a three pointer by Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) got Hollins on the board. The Hornets led 10-5 with just over 15 minutes left to play in the first half. Hollins had several good opportunities to trim the advantage but couldn't find their range from the field. Shenandoah went on a 12-0 run to build a huge lead. Hollins continued to struggle for the floor and thanks in part to nine missed shots from point blank range, Hollins found themselves in a 32-13 halftime hole. Hollins held their own on the defensive end, but four of 26 shooting, 15.4%, doomed the home team.
Senior Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) missed much of the first half due to foul trouble but brought much needed offense to the floor as she scored Hollins first six points of the second half. However, the home team was unable to cut into the Shenandoah lead as the Hornets matched Hollins hoop for hoop. Turnovers once again reared their ugly head as Hollins couldn't find the handle during the second 20 minutes of play. Hollins turned it over just six times during the first half but during the second frame, Hollins turned it over 13 times leading to 14 Shenandoah points. The Hornets also enjoyed a 39-28 advantage on the boards and despite much better second half offense, Hollins fell to Shenandoah 74-37.
Catron led Hollins in scoring for the second consecutive game. The sophomore guard had 11 points, two assists, and a pair of steals. Campbell scored all 10 of her points in the second half while Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) led the team with nine rebounds.
Holly Chittenden missed a triple-double by three assists. The junior forward scored 15 points to go with her game high 18 rebounds and seven assists. Ashley McGhee, Kirstyn Arcata, and Olivia Callan joined Chittenden in double digits with 10 points each.
Hollins will travel to Lynchburg to face Randolph College on Friday night. The game with the WildCats is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
