Box Score Staunton, VA - Thursday marked the final game of a three game road trip to start the season for the Hollins basketball team. After falling in their opening tournament, Hollins traveled to Mary Baldwin in a matchup of foes looking for their first win of the 2014-15 season.
Hollins got the game of to a good start by scoring the first point of the contest. The Squirrels quickly answered by taking their first lead of the night. A pair of Hollins free throws allowed the visitors to retake the lead, a lead that they wouldn't give up for the remainder of the game. Hollins pushed their lead to eight points, 19-11, with just over eight minutes left to play in the first half. Hollins looked poised to put the game away early, but Mary Baldwin used some timely jumpers off Hollins turnovers to keep the score close. With just two minutes left int he half, Hollins finally built their lead to double digits and the road team took a 13 point advantage into the halftime break.
The second half saw Hollins come out a seize control of the matchup in the opening moments of play. Hollins leading scorer, Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) played just four minutes in the first frame due to picking up a pair of early fouls. The sophomore guard got going quickly in the second half by scoring nine of Hollins first 10 points of the half. Hollins built their lead to 18 points with the game entering it's final five minutes of play. Hollins outscored the Squirrels six to five the rest of the way en route to securing their first victory of the season, 58-39.
Parfitt finished with a game high 15 points to go with her six rebounds and five steals in just 19 minutes of action. Junior point guard Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) came off the bench to score 12 points while handing out a team high four assists and four steals. Senior Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) added 12 points and six rebounds and Kaitlyn Taylor (Gastonia, NC) grabbed a team high seven rebounds to go with six points.
Mary Baldwin was led by Kaybria Johnson and her 13 points and 12 rebounds. Vontisha Redmond scored nine points, five rebounds, and four assists while Teanna Peavy came off the bench to secure a game high 15 rebounds.
Hollins will continue their out of conference play when they host Averett University on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars come to Roanoke for a 2:00pm tip off and the game can be seen live on the web.
