The Lead:Â Hollins made a third trip to the Lynchburg area on Tuesday night when they went to Sweet Briar to face their archrival Vixens in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup. Hollins used a 6-1 start and 6-0 finish to take the first set. Hollins trailed early but used a 7-0 run to regain the advantage and pull away for a 2-0 lead. The Green and Gold looked to end a nearly seven-year ODAC drought with a win. Hollins trailed early but rallied to tie the score. The lead would go back and forth and with the score tied at 24-24, HU got the final two points to secure their first ODAC win since 2019.
HighlightsÂ
- Hollins defeated Sweet Briar 25-9, 25-17, 27-25.
- A Meredith Crawley ace and Sweet Briar error gave HU a 6-1 start to the match. Leading 20-9, Crawley then served out the first set with the final two points coming via the service ace.
- In the second set, the Vixens used a 3-0 run to take control of the action. A kill by Abby Neel and ace served up by Laken Tingler and Hollins had rallied to tie the score at 12-12. Tingler, Neel, and Ava Willard would score three of the next four points and Hollins would ride that momentum to a 2-0 lead.
- Hollins appeared poised to sweep the Vixens on their home court, but another good Sweet Briar start would give the home team a 15-13 lead. An Annabelle Kemper kill and two service aces by Carina Dolci would tie the score at 16-16. The two long-time ODAC foes would trade the lead and see the match tied at 25-25. Cassidy Henderson put Hollins on the brink of the sweep with a kill. When the Sweet Briar attack was off the mark, Hollins had earned their first ODAC in of the season
- Hollins last won an ODAC match nearly seven years ago win the then Kat Lawson led Green and Gold squad beat Ferrum on October 1, 2019.
- Kemper led a balanced attack with eight kills while Neel added six. Norah Madrey, Willard, and Henderson each recorded five kills. Tingler handed out a match high 23 assists.
- Behind the service line, Crawley and Neel combined for 10 aces.
Up Next: Hollins will host Mid-Atlantic Christian and Johnson & Wales on Saturday in a tri-match. Prior to the opening match of the day, Hollins will celebrate her three seniors on Senior Day in the main gym.
