The Lead: Hollins traveled to Winchester to face Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon in the second to two road games this week. The Green and Gold would face a Hornet squad sitting one game ahead of them in the most recent Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings. The home team scored first and 11 of the first 13 points of the game in building a 16-8 advantage. The Hornets were able to build on the lead and took a 32-20 edge into the halftime break. During the second half, Hollins cut the deficit into single digits with five minutes left to play. However, HU could get no closer as the Hornets would go on to pick up the ODAC win, 68-56.
Highlights
- Shenandoah started the game with a 4-0 run that was halted by a basket by Zaria Holden. However, the home standing Hornets scored the next seven to make it 11-2. Trailing 16-5, A Sarah Morales jumper followed by a free throw from Missy Hazard would make it 16-8 after one quarter of play.
- Two Erin Allen free throws started the second frame. With just under seven minutes on the clock, Shenandoah had increased their lead into double digits. Morales answered with a free throw before the Hornets pushed their advantage to 12. The deficit would grow to 13 before back-to-back baskets by Jacorra Russell and Holden. A late three-pointer from Shenandoah made the score 32-20 at the half. Hollins shot just over 19% during the first 20 minutes of play.
- The lead grew to 16 before Russell and Holden combined for a 6-0 run to get Hollins back to within 10 points, 38-38. The Hornets regrouped and regained control to take a 55-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
- A pair of Abby Kingery free throws followed by hoops by Noelani Carter and Gracie Huffard would get Hollins to within nine points with just over 5:00 on the clock. That's as close as the visitors could get and after a Holden layup in the closing seconds, Shenandoah had grabbed the ODAC win, 68-56.
- Holden led Hollins with 13 points and six rebounds. Russell added 11 points and six boards while Kingery added 10 bench points and a pair of steals. Huffard finished with five rebounds, two blocks and four steals.
