The Lead:Â The Hollins basketball team took to the road for the first of two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) games this week. The first stop was the short trip to Salem to face Roanoke College on Wednesday night. The teams traded baskets to open the game before Roanoke seized control with a 9-2 start. Hollins got to within three, but the Maroons maintained a six-to-eight-point lead for much of the first half. A late three-pointer by the Green and Gold made it a one possession game at the half, 25-22. Hollins came out quickly in the second half and took their first lead of the night. However, the Maroons hit a three-pointer to regain a lead they would not give up. The lead grew to as many as 12 but Hollins rallied to make it a three-point game with just over eight minutes left to play. Roanoke used defensive stops that turned into transition baskets to pull away and held on for the 66-57 win.
HighlightsÂ
- Roanoke opened the scoring, but it was quickly answered by Sarah Morales. The Maroons took a 9-2 edge forcing and early Hollins timeout. After the stoppage, a Zaria Holden jump shot followed by a layup from Erin Allen to get HU to within a basket.
- The second quarter started with Hollins trailing by eight. Jacorra Russell scored to cut into the deficit, but Roanoke was able to keep a cushion for much of the 10-minutes period. Morales and Russell each scored to stay with six and when Missy Hazard connected from long range, the game would be 25-22 at the half.
- Russell scored back-to-back buckets to give Hollins her first and only lead of the evening. Roanoke responded with a three and layup to regain the lead. Gracie Huffard scored to make it 30-28. The Maroons used a 10-2 close to the quarter to reestablish control.
- With 8:39 left to play, Allen scored in the paint to cut the deficit to three. Roanoke would score seven of the next nine to turn away the last Hollins rally. The lead would grow back to 12 before Hazard cashed in from deep to make the final score 66-57.
- Russell recorded the fourth double-double of her first-year campaign, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Morales added 10 points, six boards, six assists, a block, and two steals. Allen had eight points and six rebounds with Holden and Hazard each scoring six.
Up Next:Â Hollins will continue on the road with a visit to Winchester on Saturday for a 2:00pm opening tip-off with Shenandoah.
