Late Hollins Rally Leads to ODAC Win

The Lead: For the final time this regular season, the Hollins basketball team faced an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent on the road. HU made the trip to Lynchburg to face Randolph College in hopes of ending an end of season losing streak and secure their position in the ODAC standings. Trailing early, Hollins used a 13-6 run to take the lead after 10-minutes of play. A Randolph rally would cut the deficit to two with just over 3:00 left to play before the half. HU pushed their edge back to five before settling on a 28-26 advantage at the break. The Green and Gold pushed the lead to double digits before the WildCats used a 5-1 close to the period making it 48-42. The Randolph comeback continued and with 4:17 left on the clock, it was the home team with a 53-50 lead. Hollins rallied in the closing minutes with a three-point play followed by three made free throws and a three-pointer. Each team traded a pair of free throws and at the final horn, Hollins had escaped with a 61-55 victory.

Highlights 
  • Hollins trailed 4-2, Sarah Morales tied the game with a pair of free throws. Erin Allen gave Hollins her first lead and after an Abby Kingery 3-pointer, the lead grew to five. Jacorra Russell scored in the closing seconds to give HU a 17-10 lead heading into the second stanza.
  • Randolph rallied to cut the lead to two ahead of a pair of free throws by Zaria Holden. Morales pushed the advantage to six before a WildCat rally made it 28-26 at the half.
  • After seeing the home team re-take the lead, Russell and Morales scored back-to-back hoops to put Hollins back in front. Russell and Gracie Huffard combined to go 4-4 from the line to give Hollins their largest lead of the game, 48-37Randolph won't go away and got back into the game, 48-42, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The WildCats continued to rally and cut the Hollins lead to 50-49 at the media timeout. A score coming out of the short break put the Cats back in front. Trailing 53-50, Russell drove to the basket, scored, and completed the three-point play to tie the score. The first-year then hit 1-2 from the stripe to give Hollins the edge. Two more free throws by Abby Kingery extended the lead to three and when Holden connected from long range, Hollins was back in control 59-53 with just 20 seconds to play. The teams exchanged made free throws and when the final buzzer blew, Hollins had gotten their second win of the season over Randolph, 61-55.
  • Holden scored 13 points with six rebounds. Russell added 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Morales finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and two helpers. Huffard scored eight with six rebounds, including 4-4 from the free throw line.
Up Next: Hollins wraps up the 2025-26 regular season on Saturday when they play host to Bridgewater College. The game with the Eagles is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00pm.
