The Lead: The Hollins University volleyball team returned to Salem to compete at Day Two of the 2025 Maroon Classic, hosted by Roanoke College. HU took on North Carolina Wesleyan looking to pick up their first win of the tournament. NCW took the opening set, but Hollins rallied to even the match at 1-1. Tied in the third, the Bishops used an 8-0 run to seize control and carry that to a 3-1 win over the Green and Gold. In their tournament finale, Hollins played a Salem team that came into the matchup with five wins on the young season. The Spirits controlled the match early and raced out to a 1-0 advantage. The second frame was tied at 21-21 before a Salem run that would propel them to a 3-0 win.
Highlights:Â
- Hollins fell to NCWU 20-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-25.
- After falling in set number one, Hollins would use A Rachel Hull service rotation to score six straight points, two on kills by Aliyah Lightsey, to carry themselves to a 1-1 score.
- A Hull kill made it 14-14 but the Battling Bishops scored the next eight points to take the momentum and use that run to a 3-1 win.
- Alyssa Reed led all attackers with 13 kills with Lightsey adding eight and Laken Tingler finished with six. Hull served four aces and handed out 14 assists.
- Meredith Crawley led the back row with 14 digs with Reed adding 13 and Sophia Maurer 12. Anisia Dean recorded 10 assists while Lightsey and Norah Madrey combined for three HU blocks.
- In their final match of the tournament, HU fell to Salem College 15-25, 22-25, 12-25.
- Hollins found themselves in a 1-0 hole, but a Reed kill made it 21-21 in the second set. However, Salem used a 3-0 run to take the set and carry that on to a 3-0 win over HU.
- The overall stats would be close to even; it was the .348 hitting percentage that carried Salem to the sweep.
- Lightsey continued her solid start to the season with a team high eight kills and a block. Dean (9) and Hull(9) equaled one another in assists while Dean led the defense with nine digs.
- Madrey had a pair of blocks with Reed finishing the match with six kills, and ace, and seven digs.
Up Next:Â Hollins begins Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday when they play host to Bridgewater College at 6:30pm.
