The Lead:Â The Hollins soccer team opened a three match home stand on Friday afternoon when Salem College can to campus for a rare weekday noon opening kick. Hollins took her first lead of the season with a long-range goal to start the scoring. Salem answered and when they found the back of the net off a corner, kick, the Spirits led 2-1, and the visitors took a 3-1 edge into the break. Another SC score allowed Salem to push their advantage. Hollins answered in the final 10 minutes with a goal that came from a rebound off the top crossbar to make the final 4-2.
HighlightsÂ
- Hollins netted her first goal of the young season less than seven minutes into play. The Salem keeper came way out of her crease to play a ball that rebounded out to the waiting foot of Evelin Lemus-Arriaga. The junior sent a long range shot to the upper left part of the net and over the head of a defender to give HU a 1-0 advantage.
- Darilyn Nieto came into the match with eight goals and added to that total to tie the match, 1-1.
- Salem received three consecutive corner kicks and on the third attempt, the ball caromed around the Hollins box and found an open Spirit to give the visitors the lead. Nieto scored her 10th goal of the season to make it 3-1 at the half.
- After a third Nieto score, Hollins cut into the deficit when Ava Rodgers sent a shot from deep over the keeper's head and off the crossbar. Evelyn Keefer won a race to the rebound and sent the ball into the back of the net to make the final score 4-2.
- Keefer (4) and Lemus-Arriaga (2) led Hollins in shots taken. Those two joined, Lida Krodel, Valtinique Simmons, and Anna Starman to tally all seven shots on goal.
- Rodgers earned her first collegiate point with the assist on the Keefer tally. T Shover started in goal and went the distance making 10 stops, her third consecutive double-digit effort in as many matches.
Up Next: Hollins will be right back on the pitch with a visit from Trinity (D.C.) on Monday for a 4:00pm start.
