Hollins Announces Hall of Fame Class

Roanoke, VA - At the annual Reunion Weekend, the 2025 Hollins Athletic Hall of Fame Class will be inducted A legendary coach/administrator and basketball standout will be honored by the Hollins University Athletic Department as the newest inductees into the Hollins Athletic Hall of Fame.

Lynda Calkins served as the Director of Athletics at Hollins from 1985–2008. She also served as the Head Swim Coach and Chair of the Physical Education department.  As the Director of Athletics, Calkins oversaw six intercollegiate athletics programs, the physical education department, intramural programs, sports camps and recreation programs. Calkins served as chair of the NCAA Council on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Selection Committee for Ethnic and Minority Grants and the Strategic Planning Committee. She also served on various other NCAA committees - Management Council, Administrative Committee, Budget Committee, Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee and the Honors Committee. Calkins was also a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference executive committee from 1993-2002 and served as president of the Conference from 1995-97. As the swim coach, Calkins was a four-time ODAC coach of the Year (1987, 1990, 1992, and 1995) and guided her teams to conference Championships in 1992 and 1993. She coached numerous All-ODAC swimmers as well as seeing Kat Horton win the 1995 NCAA National Championship in the 100 and 200 Butterfly. Her commitment to sports extended beyond Hollins. Calkins was a member of the Board of Directors for Virginia Amateur Sports and sponsor of the Commonwealth Games and served the community through service on the Health and Safety Committee of the American Red Cross and the Board of the Roanoke League of Artists.

Emily (Ferrell) Allen '03 was a standout member of the basketball team while at Hollins. Emily was a starter on the basketball team from 1999-2003. While wearing the Green and Gold, Allen played in all 101 games, helping Hollins to three consecutive double-digit win seasons, including three trips to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. At the time of her graduation, Emily was one of only six 1,000-point scorers in school history and is currently 10th all-time on the Hollins basketball scoring list. In four seasons, the Roanoke native amassed 1,095 points, 375 rebounds, 245 assists, 206 steals, and 13 blocked shots.  During the 2000-01 season, Allen set the single season Hollins program record for 3-point Field Goal Percentage at 45.5% and her career 3-pt percentage is still tops in HU history at 35.9%. Despite not having played in over two decades, Allen is still fifth in Hollins history in both assists and steals, categories in which she was the program leader at the time of her graduation.
 
The duo will be inducted during the annual Hollins Reunion Weekend on May 31. The ceremony will take place during the Hollins Yesterday, Today and Forever event at 1:30 in the HU Chapel.  In addition, but inductees will be honored during the Swimming Alumnae Day and the Basketball Alumnae Day program during the 2025-26 season.
