Hollins University Announces Inaugural Inductees into ODAC Hall of Fame
Â
Hollins University proudly announces the induction of four trailblazing alumnae and leaders into the inaugural class of the
Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Hall of Fame. These honorees represent the highest standards of athletic excellence, leadership, and service in Hollins history.
"This inaugural Hall of Fame class embodies the heart and soul of the ODAC," explained ODAC Commissioner
Brad Bankston. "They are champions, leaders, and trailblazers whose influence reaches far beyond wins and championships. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we are proud to honor individuals whose dedication and spirit have left an indelible mark on the conference and inspired all who have been part of our story."
Marjorie Berkley
A pioneer in women's collegiate athletics, Marjorie Berkley is the namesake of the ODAC's prestigious Marjorie Berkley Award. The Marjorie Berkley Scholar-Athlete Award is given each spring to a member institution female senior (or graduate student) and conference sport participant who exhibits the highest athletic, academic, and extracurricular achievements. She served as the first associate commissioner of the ODAC and held leadership, coaching, and teaching roles at Lynchburg College and Hollins University from 1959 to 1989. Berkley coached four undefeated field hockey teams and led Hollins to a VAIAW Field Hockey Championship in 1979. Her national impact includes directing championships for the United States Women's Lacrosse Association and the AIAW National Division III Field Hockey Championship. Berkley was inducted into both the Hollins and James Madison University Athletic Halls of Fame.
Lynda Calkins
A transformative figure in Hollins athletics, Lynda Calkins served as Director of Athletics from 1985 to 2008 and coached swimming for over two decades. Under her leadership, Hollins won ODAC Swimming Championships in 1992 and 1993 and finished as runner-up four times. She was named ODAC Coach of the Year four times and mentored 14 All-ODAC swimmers, including one ODAC Swimmer of the Year. Calkins also held key roles on the ODAC Executive Committee and served as ODAC President from 1995 to 1997. Her national impact includes service on numerous NCAA committees, including the Council on Women's Athletics and the Management Council.
Elizabeth Cheng
Elizabeth Cheng made history as Hollins', and the conference's first ever, ODAC Women's Golfer of the Year in 2013. Competing from 2010 to 2014, she was a two-time All-ODAC First Team selection and twice named ODAC Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Cheng earned NCAA All-American honors in consecutive seasons and placed 12th at the 2013 NCAA Women's Golf Championships. She also won the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate and was recognized by VaSID All-State in each of the first three years the organization honored Women's Golf—standing out as the only non-Division I athlete to receive the distinction.
Kat Horton
A standout swimmer from 1994 to 1996, Kat Horton earned ODAC Swimmer of the Year honors in 1996 and was a two-time All-ODAC selection. She achieved national acclaim as a four-time NCAA All-American and won NCAA National Championships in the 100 and 200 Butterfly in 1995. Horton remains the Hollins record holder in the 100 and 200 Butterfly and the 200 and 400 Individual Medley.
Celebrating Excellence
These inductees exemplify the spirit and legacy of Hollins University athletics and have set a standard for future generations. Their achievements reflect the university's commitment to excellence, leadership, and the empowerment of women in sports.
