Hollins Makes History in Home Finale

Hollins vs Ferrum |Tuesday, February 18, 2025 | Roanoke, Va.

The Basics
Score:
 Hollins 59, Ferrum 46
Records: Hollins 12-11 / 5-10 ODAC | Panthers 13-11 / 7-8 ODAC

The Lead: Hollins played host to Ferrum College on Tuesday night. The game was moved up a day to try to beat the forecasted weather in the Roanoke Valley. Hollins would see the Panthers score first but the Green and Gold quickly responded and led for much of the first half. At the break HU was up 28-20. However, Ferrum scored eight straight to tie the score, but Hollins would never let their guests take the lead. The game was tied at 39-39 in the fourth quarter but Hollins made a pair of three-point plays and pulled away down the stretch to take the game, 59-46, making history along the way. Since the NCAA first sponsored women's basketball in 1981-82, Hollins had never had a non-losing season. With the win over the Panthers, Hollins secured their first non-losing season in the NCAA era.

Highlights
  • After seeing Ferrum score the first three points, Missy Hazard hit a three-pointer to spark a 9-0 Hollins run. The Panthers answered to tie but another long-range bucket by Hazard made it 12-9. Erin Allen made it 14-10 after one quarter of play.
  • Grayson Alfano scored from three to start the second frame. A jump shot by Cabria Mutz pushed the lead to nine, 26-17, and HU took a 28-20 lead into the break.
  • Ferrum scored eight points in a row to tie the score before Ariana Gutierrez made two of three from the free throw line to stop the surge. Sarah Morales made a pair of free throws to send the game into the final period with Hollins clinging to a 35-33 advantage.
  • The score would be tied at 37-37 and 39-39 before Hazard scored five straight points to give HU control. In a one possession game, Zaria Holden connected from long range to put Hollin sup six. Mutz scored on a tip-in and followed it by a score in the paint to push the lead into double-digits. Hollins held the Panthers scoreless in the final two minutes on their way to a 59-46 victory.
  • The win was the 12th of the season matching the 1992-93 team for the most wins in the NCAA era. Their five Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) wins are the most since 2021-22 and with a 12-11 record and just one game left on the schedule, HU secured the school's first non-losing season since the NCAA started recognizing Women's Basketball by sponsoring a National Championship in 1982.
  • Hazard netted a game high 14 points with Mutz adding 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and five steals. Morales scored eight while handing out seven assists. Allen and Alfano combined to give Hollins 16 points off the bench.
Up Next: The 2024-25 regular season is scheduled to come to a close on Saturday when Hollins makes the trip to North Carolina to face Guilford in a rematch from earlier this month.
